...I feel kinda silly but Hey! Perhaps I ask dumb questions so no one else has too!...lol! I think the confusion came from the fact that the title of the special villian doesn't always show up...sometimes they are named onscreen without the "Steamed" or "Outlaw" or "Rebel" title. I noticed the same thing with the "Evolved" status: sometimes it shows up in standard gameplay, sometimes not. Looking them up in the vault seems to give the true indication.
Either way, if I can't find my car keys in the future, I'll check under the couch cushions before I panic!!!

To Sum Up: It seems that a variant villain trap is in effect a "Locked Trap", never to be used for any other purpose than storing and using the Pre-Loaded Variant Villian.
Taking the villain off that specific crystal for any reason, in any way, erases that villain variant permanently.
If you don't agree with this or have some other option, post it up!! I would love to hear it!
