Long story short, I bought the Brawl and Chain variant. I was very limited with traps at the start so I used it to trap another guy, I think , erasing my variant!! (ok, get it out if your system: On the count of three everyone look at the screen and say," What did you think was going to happen?...MORON!" 1....2....3....blah, blah, blah, Blah, BLAH...MORON! Ok...moving along: I believe I wrongly assumed he would have been stored in the Villian Vault at the academy. Has anyone else been stupid enou....I mean...has anyone else had this problem? And if so, are we out of luck or were you able to recover the variant Villian?
Also, I want to protect the next variant Villian trap I buy! (See Sales Thread for January 10th GameStop Skylander Day Sale) if I erase Lob Goblin, I will be.....miffed.

I dont personally have a variant villain, but try putting in regular b and c. Its possible the trap remembers it as outlaw even if the game doesnt.

I don't know of a way to get it back I checked the vault prior to using the trap and noticed that the variant registered as a normal villian. So dont feel bad I nearly did the same thing. But I was wondering if you would lose it if you trapped another villian in it. I figured as much but now I am pretty sure you will lose it. I am not going to buy all the traps but I will get enough of each element to have each villian trapped with the exception of light/ dark. As there are only three traps and 4 villians in those elements and i dont want to buy doubles. It does not make sense to me that they make six magic when there aren't that many magic villians but only three light and dark with 4 villians. Go figure.

These are the steps to keeping your precious variants safe!
1. Paint the trap bright pink 2. Wrap trap in hazard tape 3. Obtain shovel 4. Dig a very deep hole 5. Place said trap in the hole 6. Fill hole with dirt (cement would be even better) 7. Keep the location of the hole a secret to the rest of the world
I guess the tape and paint are kinda useless now that the trap is in a hole....... but its your villains funeral if someone mistakes it for a regular villain...

lol… Ok. All joking aside.
To Sum Up: It seems that a variant villain trap is in effect a "Locked Trap", never to be used for any other purpose than storing and using the Pre-Loaded Variant Villian. Taking the villain off that specific crystal for any reason, in any way, erases that villain variant permanently.
If you don't agree with this or have some other option, post it up!! I would love to hear it!

In regular traps it remembers the evolved status, while the villain vault doesnt, which leads me to believe the villain vault wont remember variants, but the trap will. So try putting the regular character into the trap.

What is everyone talking about? You can't lose these. To get them back either put the regular one back into the trap and it will register as it was before. If you haven't gotten that far story wise just wait until you get to the chapter that has the Villain and use it to capture it into the Trap.

We did not know if it was lost forever or not and this thread was looking for an answer. Judging by the vault info it looked like the variant was gone. I wasn't going to take the chance of losing a variant to test it out. So Orion's Islands go ahead and put Brawl and Chain back in the trap and see if it registers as Outlaw and let us know. Thanks for the info Daphtaru.

Ah, if worse comes to worse ask 1ofWiisdom or myself, we spend a lot of time looking into this kinda stuff. I thought it was common knowledge by now after the release of Outlaw. So my mistake.
