I always like the idea of molten core fire characters, like the Balrog from The Fellowship of the Ring. Color erase options on some photo apps make for some interesting options...

This is a really good idea, perhaps tfb didn't make his hands light up in the hopes someone would do this, I cant imagine any other reason for them not to have done so, his arms and legs are of similar width.

I think they may have been faced with the "Hothead issue". He could really have used three LED's...One for his head and one for each arm. But I think they hit a limitation somewhere, either with power draw on the portals or unit cost of each skylander (although you hope they would have made an exception if this was the case to produce a particularly good and unique Skylander!).
